Background

Beams’ mission is to enhance safety across industries, beginning with aviation safety. We use state of the art in-house and third-party Machine Learning models and LLMs to identify and monitor risks and hazards facing the airline industry. Our platform analyses safety reports at scale, enabling faster decision making, deeper safety insights and proactive risk management.

Headquartered in Berlin and with an office in Barcelona, Beams operates within GDPR-compliant European data centres, offering peace of mind to its partners. Our international team champions a remote work culture with regular in-person meet-ups. We value cross-functional collaboration, short feedback loops and continuous improvement.

We are looking for an ML engineer to join our small team. The ideal candidates would have hands-on experience deploying machine learning models in production and will thrive in a fast-paced, early stage and innovative startup environment. We’re a highly collaborative engineering culture and we write tests first, pair every day and commit directly to trunk. N.B. Due to time-zone alignment and business needs, applicants must be able to work within the EU or the UK.

Responsibilities

  • You will do what a ML engineer usually does: track and analyze the status-quo of the literature in the field of ML and apply it to solve problems of our airline clients

  • Work closely with product managers and engineers to integrate AI models into production-ready software

  • Write clean, efficient, and well-documented code, adhering to best practices in software engineering and maintaining high standards of code quality

  • You build it, you run it!

  • Frequently engage in pair programming sessions, providing constructive collaboration and contributing to the continuous improvement of development processes and practices

Qualifications

  • Preferably a scientific education in computer science, ML or related field; or expertise can also be proven via online courses / Kaggle

  • At least 3+ years of work experience, with an aptitude to learn quickly.

  • Strong theoretical and practical understanding of machine learning and statistics, using analytical and logical thinking skills

  • You know that Python is not just a snake but have a good understanding of what it can do and also the PyData ecosystem (pandas, scikit-learn, pytorch/tensorflow and many more)

  • We love to put ML in production so we expect you to have some experiences with cloud services (AWS, Google Cloud) and typical production pipelines (FastAPI, Docker)

  • Well-versed in designing, debugging and documentation

  • Experience working in an interdisciplinary team, and not afraid to work on engineering topics

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with strong self-awareness.

  • Keen to work in a setup where most of your day is spent in pair programming sessions (previous experience preferred but not required)

Desirable

  • A passion for the aviation industry and a desire to leverage AI technology to drive improvements and innovations in airline safety

Benefits

  • Competitive salary and benefits package

  • Equity in a rapidly growing company

  • Annual company offsite and access to our office in Barcelona and co-working space in your location

  • High-end equipment to facilitate your best work

  • A flexible hybrid remote work policy
